Deus ex Machinima

Year of production:2013
Running Time: 5:32
Color/sound/English
"Trapped in a world he never made," Deus Ex Machinima's protagonist is frustrated with the limitations imposed on him by being a cliché character in a video game whose basic architecture is unalterable. A bricolage of Hermann Hess's Harry Hollar, Scorses's Travis Bickle and Gerber's Howard the Duck, he subverts his intended programming of thief and member of the underworld to become a poet/philosopher who develops self-awareness and questions his existence, environment and societal conventions. Borrowing from the action game environment and referencing tropes from the horror/mystery film genres, Deus Ex Machinima frustrates all of these conventions as nothing expected happens. Deus Ex Machinima is an animation video production appropriating the animation graphics engine and environment of the video game, Grand Theft Auto IV by Rockstar Games.

No.59 Cherry

Year of production: 2012
Running Time: 6:26
Color/No sound
No. 59 Cherry is a single channel video work that addresses the concept of “the gaze.” Through this piece I explore how the gaze has affected the feminine notion of “self” and “beauty” in our society and how this is linked to female aspirations through the completion of oneself through the gaze of the other.
Both the subject and object of our gaze is a woman applying lipstick but as we continue watching her, she takes her attempt at looking more beautiful to the extreme and enlarges her lips and smile to cover her whole face. This ritual does not make her any happier with herself nor does it make her any more attractive to the viewer—in fact it defeats the purpose, highlighting the futility of the endeavour and how we can perpetuate unrealistic concepts of beauty by the act of looking or being looked at.
